Earthly Eloquence: Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Korean Ceramics

시카고한인문화원(이하 문화원)은 4월 26일부터 10월 18일까지 문화원 박물관 특별 전시회 ‘Earthly Eloquence: Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Korean Ceramics’를  개최합니다. 도자기는 오랜 세월동안 한국 예술 유산의 중심에 자리해 왔으며, 기술적 숙련도와 미적 세련미를 동시에 담아내고 있습니다. Earthly Eloquence 전시는 현대 한국 도자의 역동적인 발전을 조명하며, 수세기 동안 이어온 전통이 대담한 실험과 혁신을 통해 새롭게 재해석되는 모습을 보여줍니다.

이 전시는 세계적인 명성을 보유한 이수경, 김익경, 김인진, 이강효, 허상욱, 스티븐 영 리를 비롯한 저명한 장인과 신진 작가들의 30여 점의 작품을 통해 청자, 백자, 분청사기, 옹기 등의 지속적인 유산을 조명합니다. 또한, 오늘날 도예가들이 형태, 질감, 개념의 경계를 확장하며 이 유서 깊은 예술에 새로운 가능성을 열어가는 모습을 선보입니다. 한국계 미국인 작가들의 작품도 포함되어 있어 그들이 미국적 시각으로 자신의 유산을 재해석하는 방식을 통해 정체성과 전통을 다각적으로 탐구하는 현대 글로벌 시대의 흐름을 반영합니다.

‘Earthly Eloquence’ 의 특별 프로그램이 5월 10일 토요일 오후 5시 30분 비스코홀에서 이강효 작가와의 대화가 Tradition as Inspiration이라는 주제로 개최되며, 관람객들의 작품 이해를 돕고자 전시 투어가 당일 4시 30부터 문화원 박물관에서 진행됩니다.  시카고 미술관 지연수 부큐레이터와 이강효 작가가 작품과 전통적 영감을 바탕으로 한 창작 과정에 대해 이야기를 나눕니다. 이강효 작가는 분청 도자기로 유명한 도예가로 그의 작품은 빅토리아 앤 알버트 박물관, 대영 박물관, 필라델피아 미술관, 시카고 미술관 등 세계적인 미술관에 소장되어 있습니다. 무료로 진행되는 본 프로그램에 참석을 원하시는 분들은  Google Form을 통하여 사전등록 하실 수 있습니다.

본 전시는 NEA (National Endowment for the Arts), 한국공예·디자인문화진흥원 (Korean Craft and Design Foundation), Yang Won Sun Foundation등의 기관에서 지원하였으며 전시회가 끝난 후에는 문화원 박물관 내 상설 도자기 전시 공간을 만들어, 한국 도자기 예술을 지속적으로 보존하고 전시할 예정입니다.

The Korean Cultural Center of Chicago (KCCoC) proudly presents Earthly Eloquence: Tradition and Innovation in Contemporary Korean Ceramics, a landmark exhibition celebrating the vibrant evolution of contemporary Korean ceramics. Opening on April 26 and running through October 18 at the KCCoC Museum.

Ceramics have long been at the heart of Korea’s artistic heritage, embodying both technical mastery and aesthetic refinement. Earthly Eloquence celebrates the dynamic evolution of contemporary Korean ceramics, where centuries-old traditions are reimagined through bold experimentation and innovation.
Featuring over 30 works by established masters and emerging artists, this exhibition highlights the enduring legacy of celadon, white porcelain, Buncheong, and Onggi wares. At the same time, it showcases how today’s ceramic artists push the boundaries of form, texture, and concept, forging new possibilities for this time-honored art form. The exhibition also includes works by Korean American artists who reinterpret their heritage through an American lens, offering a multifaceted perspective on identity and tradition in today’s globalized world.

As part of the exhibition, a special program titled “Tradition as Inspiration” will be held on May 10 at 5:30 PM at Bisco Hall, featuring an in-depth conversation with renowned ceramic artist Lee Kang-Hyo. The conversation will explore Lee’s creative journey and his innovative approach to Buncheong ceramics. The event will be moderated by Yeonsoo Chee, Associate Curator of Korean Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Lee Kang-Hyo’s works are held in the permanent collections of world-renowned institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
A guided exhibition tour will precede the talk at 4:30 PM on May 10 at the Korean Cultural Center Museum, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the featured works and their historical and cultural context. This event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required at www.kccoc.org/ceramics.

Looking ahead, the Korean Cultural Center of Chicago is excited to announce plans to establish a permanent exhibition space dedicated to Korean ceramics. This new initiative will ensure the continued preservation, study, and public appreciation of Korea’s rich ceramic tradition for generations to come.
